5 Accomplishments I am Grateful for in 2023

Keeping this reflection short and sweet. As the end of another year dawns upon us, I would like to take a moment and share the 5 personal accomplishments in 2023 that I am most proud of.

  • Family: My daughter was in Matric this year and I really made a point of attending all her sport and social functions this year. I am proud of the woman she has become, and I look forward to seeing her grow as she becomes a first year B-Comm Industrial Psychology student at Stellenbosch University next year. My eldest son became the South African junior champion in Bodyboarding which made us very proud parents. My youngest son is on the academic merit list which made me think he takes after his mother and not me.
  • Health: I had a very good year with my health as I managed to be very consistent with my training and my eating habits. I took part in my first (and maybe last) Trans-Baviaans MTB race which really helped me get out of bed throughout our very long and cold winter in the Cape. Our family in general had a great year when it comes to our health.
  • Friends: 2023 was a great year for me on the friends front. We had our 30-year reunion at Paarl Boys High this year and it was great to connect with many of my old class mates who I had lost contact with. Being part of a greater family really is a massive privilege that I am truly grateful for. I live in quite a small village and luckily everybody is very sociable. I had many opportunities for social interaction.
  • Spirit: Spiritually in 2023 was quite challenging as a few obstacles came my way and I didn’t go to church as often as I wanted to. I am grateful for very close friends that I can approach and use as sounding boards. This made me realize once again that we must never isolate ourselves when we are in a bad spot. You must do the opposite and reach out more when you go through difficult times.
  • Work: 2023 was an incredibly tough year in business and yet I enjoyed the challenges that were presented. Thanks to a strong willed and hard-working team we have managed to get through, and things are looking very positive for 2024. I also enrolled my one business with Aurik Business Accelerator. We are super excited at the prospect of building a good asset of value that can be saleable in the next 3-5 years.

You will see that I have broken my year up into 5 areas and I want to explain why. Society has dictated to us that if you drive a fancy car and live in a big house then you are successful. I do however believe that we must have a moderate amount of success in these five areas for us to be able to say that we are successful. May 2024 be your best year yet and may you find a great balance between work, family, health, friends and spirit.
