DEBUNKING MOTIVATION
I really believe in up skilling yourself for the future, and I decided to do exactly that in the first three weeks of lockdown during Covid. I was fortunately on a farm in the Karoo, and we had the freedom to play tennis, ride my mountain bike, and get our morning exercise in without anybody stopping us.
I have always been intrigued by public speaking, as I always had to make speeches when I was Captain. So, I decided to do a Public Speaking course through a company called Missing Link in Bloubergstrand. It was a massive investment at a time when my business was closed, but I decided to bite the bullet and do it anyway. The course took about six weeks, and it was far more substantial than I ever could have imagined.
INSIDE THE KEYNOTE: MOVING BEYOND SHORT-TERM HYPE
The theme of my keynote is “Debunking Motivation,” and basically, I explain why outside motivation is never a long-term solution to keep you motivated throughout the year. There are certain basics that can help you along the way, and I try to give you tools that help keep you motivated throughout the year.
As you all know, when I write my blogs, I write them with experience from sport and business. There are some beautiful nuggets that you can take from sport and apply them directly to your business or to life in general.
FROM TWICKENHAM TO THE BOARDROOM: NAVIGATING MASSIVE DEFEATS
I use a massive defeat to the English at Twickenham in 2002 to start the presentation. At the time, that was the biggest loss in Springbok history. At that specific time, I carried two records: the biggest win (101-0 against Italy) and the biggest loss (53-3 against England). Sadly, on the one side, I lost the biggest win, and luckily, on the other side, I also lost the biggest loss.
What I can say is that having the biggest win and the biggest loss at the same time shows you how quickly things can change. Sometimes for the better and sometimes for the worse, but you can under no circumstances give up. How you do not give up in those situations is what I try to navigate in this 45-minute presentation.
If you are not motivated when you run out in front of 60,000 people in a Springbok jersey, sing the National Anthem, and then face the Haka, then there is something wrong with you. In business and in life, you hardly have two people cheering for you at any given time, so it really becomes hard to be constantly motivated on a consistent basis and for months on end.
THE POWER OF A PURPOSE BIGGER THAN YOURSELF
The one thing I am 100% sure of is that you can’t just work for yourself. You have to work or play for something bigger than just yourself.
I would love to hear your thoughts and comments on the topic of motivation. Some people always look motivated and it looks like they always perform, but is that really the case? At some point, everybody gets tired and demotivated, but how do you pick yourself up? Let me know what you are thinking!
