How To Maintain Good Habits

How To Maintain Good Habits

One of the very few things I can claim that I am good at is discipline. I suspect my many years in boarding school shaped me and made me a very disciplined person in general. I must admit that corporal punishment played a big role in keeping me in line and on time. It doesn’t make it right or wrong, but it did help me a lot

Mahatma Ghandi said the following:

Your beliefs become your thoughts. Your thoughts become your words. Your words become your actions. Your actions become your habits. Your habits become your values. Your values become your destiny.

SOME TIPS TO HELP YOU ON YOUR WAY:

Today I will try and give you a few tips on how to maintain good habits as your habits will become your values and your values will determine your destiny. Let’s begin by acknowledging that all of us have bad habits and the most important thing is to be aware of it but on top of it.

  • Be very aware of your bad habits: Once you are aware of your bad habits it is much easier to manage them or stop them. If they are unmanageable then seek help and make sure they don’t destroy your life. If left unmanaged they will ultimately destroy you.
  • Routine: I have found that when I have good healthy routines in my life then it is more difficult to have time for negative things. Not having a purpose or a daily plan can lead you down the wrong path.
  • Religion: It is always difficult to talk about religion but there is no doubt that any form of religion helps us to focus on the positive, uplifting and healthy things in life. Gratitude as far as I know is in all religions. Gratitude for your health, your work, your family and your friends is key in maintaining good habits.
  • Discipline; As mentioned earlier discipline comes easy to me and if you want to maintain good habits you will need a lot of discipline. There is no substitute for discipline and if it doesn’t come easy to you then you must work at it on a daily basis. Not when you feel like it, not when people are watching you, but every single day.
  • Grace: We as humans are by nature vulnerable to temptation and that makes it tough to have healthy habits. I struggle to walk past an isle full of sweets. I absolutely love jelly babies, wine gums, fruit pastilles you name it. So I have to be very disciplined not to throw all of the above in my basket when I am at a store. Everybody has a vice and as long as you can control it and not allow it to control you then you are OK. Give yourself a little grace every now and then.

Nobody is perfect and you will never get everything perfect but it mustn’t stop us from trying. Have a great 2025
