The annual Tour de Krige started as an event where I invited a few friends to join me for mountain biking. I soon realized that many people wanted to participate in a three-day stage race but either weren’t fit enough or didn’t enjoy riding and eating with 1,500 other cyclists.
I saw an opportunity to curate a smaller, more exclusive event with a maximum of 40 riders—designed to truly spoil them. The result was the Tour de Krige, featuring five-star accommodation and a route through a Big Five game reserve.
Finding the Perfect Balance
The event consists of two relatively tough days, each covering 50 kilometers with approximately 1,000 meters of ascent. This turned out to be the magic number. Inexperienced riders faced a challenge, while seasoned Epic riders felt they had earned their beer. Striking that balance wasn’t easy—you can never keep everyone happy.
After five incredible years at Gondwana, it’s time for a change of scenery. Following much deliberation, robust debate, and careful negotiation with our sponsors, we have decided to move the 6th Annual Tour de Krige to mid-to-late September.
A New Chapter for Tour de Krige
The first Tour de Krige took place during Covid, and since then, we’ve struggled to find a suitable date that doesn’t clash with major mountain biking races. In recent years, we’ve held the event in May, booking out an entire lodge at the majestic Gondwana Game Reserve.
This year, however, we had an early booking on May 8th, which forced us to reschedule the Tour de Krige. Please stay tuned as we finalize the new date and possibly a new venue.
A big thank you to OIG, our title sponsor, for your continued support and flexibility. We’re confident you’ll be pleased when we roll out the red carpet for our 40 hand-picked guests.
