The Year in Review

The Year in Review

I don’t know if you feel the same, but the years seem to go by quicker the older I get. They say it’s like a roll of toilet paper—it runs out faster the closer you get to the core. For 313 days, we have looked ahead, focusing on new opportunities, challenges, and growth in both our business and personal lives. In the next few weeks, as we slow down operations for the festive season, it’s natural to reflect on the year that was.

I feel 2024 was a tough year for our country and economy. The 29 May elections were historic—it was the first time in thirty years that the ANC didn’t secure a majority vote. This led to massive negotiations that resulted in a Government of National Unity (GNU). I think many of us are cautiously optimistic about this new government. Whether the GNU can last the remaining four years is yet to be seen, but for now, it’s a promising arrangement.

Business before the elections was tough, with a significant portion of the population fearing what the DA termed a “doomsday coalition.” Luckily, democracy and sanity prevailed, and we now have multiple parties working together in the GNU. There’s no doubt that businesses were waiting with bated breath for the election results before making any major decisions. The two months before and after the elections were particularly quiet, but now things are incredibly busy. People want their products yesterday, and they want a Porsche but expect to pay for a Picanto. Luckily, we’re a well-oiled machine and know how to handle these demands.

Reflections on Family and Health

On the family front, it was a good year. Our daughter had her first year at university and adapted well to student life. The boys excelled in both sports and academics at school—proof they get their genes from Justine!

On the health side, we were fortunate to avoid any major hiccups in our family, and for that, we are deeply grateful. It’s easy to take health for granted, but it’s something we should work on daily to ensure we stay active. Mentally, it was also a fulfilling year for me. I felt a sense of purpose and believed I made a positive impact, not just within my family but in the lives of others.

Giving Back and Making a Difference

The diamonds of this year for me were my involvement with the Laureus Foundation and several speaking engagements where I truly felt I made a difference. Earlier this month, I attended a function in Zambia near the school where my late mother had taught. I heard beautiful stories about how she touched people’s lives through her teaching. It reminded me that life isn’t about making money or consuming—it’s about giving back and making a difference.

My mother passed away with little money and few assets, but she left a lasting legacy in the lives she impacted. That is what life is truly about.

Have an awesome break with your families, and make a difference in the world.
