Focusing On Growth

Focusing On Growth

In this ever-changing world, there is a massive shift toward adaptability, and being able to process these changes in a very short period of time is crucial. Despite this continuous barrage of change, many people still long for consistency and find solace in simplifying their lives, not complicating them. I think COVID-19 had a huge impact on people’s outlook regarding camping and getting back into nature. We also learned that being healthy and getting out into nature should never again be taken for granted. It is critically important to focus on your physical and mental health to have longevity in everything we do.

KEY LESSONS IN PERSONAL GROWTH IN 2024

Here are five things I learned in 2024. I will try to be as brief as possible because one thing we have also learned is that time is valuable.

  • The Importance Of Mental Health
I cannot remember ever hearing of children committing suicide when I was a kid. Now, I regularly read about children taking their own lives because the pressure is too much. I have three children, and we engage with them on this topic as we believe in open discussions around uncomfortable issues. I have learned that it is important to check in with friends and make sure they are in good spirits. When was the last time you called your friends just to check in and see if they are okay?
  • Global Politics and Conflict
I have always been very relaxed about local and global politics and countries doing silly things. Maybe it is my attitude that has changed, sparking my interest in global politics. What I have learned is that many countries just want to remain silent on pressing issues, which eventually come back to bite them. Evil prevails when good people do nothing, and this is evident around the world with so many wars going on. I also learned that anything can change in politics, and not even the ANC is guaranteed a win in elections.
  • Climate Change Awareness
Changing weather patterns are very concerning, and it has become apparent that more collaboration and resources are badly needed. Our country has felt the brunt of this with serious droughts in some areas and deadly floods in other parts.
  • Cherising Time With Our Parents
I learned this year that when we approach fifty, our parents are approaching eighty. That means we must try and spend as much time with them as possible. My father, who turned 80 in June, still lives in Zambia. He has dementia, and his fall triggered many things we were not prepared for. He is still hanging in there, but it is tough on everybody, especially my stepmother.
  • Cherishing Memories With Your Children
Everybody always tells you that time goes so quickly when your kids are at school. I never believed it, as a year is still 365 days. Well, it turns out that they were right. I have a daughter in her first year at Stellenbosch, and I have a son who will be leaving school in November 2025. Time has flown by, and I try to spend as much valuable time as I can with them and create memories every day.

PERSONAL GROWTH THROUGH REFLECTION

This year has brought many lessons, each one contributing to my personal growth. Whether it’s focusing on mental health, becoming more aware of global issues, or cherishing time with loved ones, every moment offers an opportunity for growth. I hope these reflections inspire you to consider your own journey of personal growth and to make the most of the time you have.
